The tappet clearance with this engine should be .006 for both inlet and exhaust and at no time should the clearance be below this amount.
First insert a feeler of the correct thickness between the tappet and valve adjusting nut, then adjust the nut until it just holds this feeler in position, after which the valve spring collar should be locked against this nut and the feeler withdrawn. The adjusting nut and collar must at all times be securely locked together, otherwise the tappet adjustment will quickly vary and cause damage to the valve stems.
