Goop in the Tank
« on: 22 Jul 2007 at 11:46 »
I'm just trying to get my 1924 TS on the road and have found the their is a layer of what looks like golden syrup in the bottom of the fuel tank stopping anything getting through the fuel cock. I assume its some sort of tank sealer that has go off. I read somewhere that this stuff does not like fuel with alcohol in it  so I've put a litre of Methylated Spirits in to see what happens. Any other suggestions?

I've had great success using POR-15 motorcycle tank cleaner and sealer. The kit comes with three components: a magic stuff that totally dissolved a very thick layer of black tarry residue from inside the tank of my 1936 AJS. I think it is caustic soda (NaOH) based, but am not sure. They say in the package that it will also remove previous tank coatings; a phosphoric acid-based rust remover/metal conditioner, and a POR-15 tank liner which hardens on contact with moisture in the air. I believe others in the group have some expererience with POR-15 coatings.

I highly recommend it if you can get it.

Thanks David,

I've ordered the POR-15, if its as good as their paint it should do the trick.
