General Douglas Discussion / Dragonfly piston rings

Which way round does the stepped scraper ring go, step up to piston crown or step down to bottom of piston?

Any information included in your advertisement is available for public viewing anywhere in the world. We strongly suggest NOT including your email address, street address or phone number.

Instead remind readers that you may be contacted via the forum's Personal Messaging (PM) system. This is a private closed system only accessible by other forum members. Because only other registered members can send personal messages, this filters out 99% of potential scammers and other morally challenged people.

Every new application for Douglas forum membership is personally checked by admin to detect spammers and scammers. However very occasionally, an undesirable applicant may manage to pass all the checks. If you receive a Personal Message from another member offering help with the parts you require, follow a few quick steps to check out the sender before responding.

Look at their profile on the left hand side of the personal message.

Are they a new member with zero posts? This is an indication to be careful. The new member has not yet proven to be a genuine Douglas enthusiast.

In their message to you, are there few details of what they have? Are they asking you to make contact via an email address or website link? These are also signs to be careful. Request more information via the PM system until you are confident the person is genuine.

Suggestions
If you have any doubts about the member making contact with you, here are some suggestions:
  • Do not respond by email or follow any links they may provide.
  • Communicate only via the Personal Message system.
  • Ask for photos of what they have.
  • Continue asking questions until you are confident the person is a genuine Douglas enthusiast. Genuine members will describe first hand Douglas experiences or display genuine knowledge of Douglas machinery.
  • If still doubtful, use the Contact button in the main menu above to contact admin for an opinion.

It was in the Whitewebbs Museum, where I saw it in 2003 (below). At that time the sump was off getting copied by someone in the LDMCC.

It seems to be a 1925 Works frame, in that it has the OB style rear fork lugs and brake anchorage. These are seen in other period photos of the factory entries at races. The following year when the model became cataloged and available to general public it had the cast lugs seen on subsequent models. Another 'early' feature is the RA (OB?) style foot peg lugs. They only wrap around the frame tube about 3/4s of the way, and are not the fully enveloping tee-fitting like on the DT models.

The engine is a slight oddity too. The bottom of the crankcase casting is extended and milled off in one great large planer surface.

In all other cases I have seen where the sump is fitted the 'window frame' in the base of the crankcase is a raised spigot. As in this example:

I see that Bonhams are offering a 1928 Brooklands Douglas special, 750cc.  ex Rex Judd collection, in their April auction next year. Does anyone know anything about it please?

General Douglas Discussion / Re: clutch cam lever return

Most models I can think of did have a return spring. On the ones where the cable is vertical a compression spring is fitted between the end of the cable adjuster and the knuckle of the operating lever. On ones like the S6 and derivatives where the cable is horizontal, an extension spring is fitted between a hole in the operating arm back to a hole through the rear wall of the primary chain case casting.

Picture of the S6 type return spring below.

General Douglas Discussion / clutch cam lever return
Last post by saluki42 - 27 Nov 2025 at 10:38
Hi I have a query regarding my Model Z clutch. The clutch disengages well, now I have a thinner friction plate fitted, but my issue is with the Cam operating arm not returning when the cable is slackened. I can't see or feel any groove in the can ramp surface so am wondering if there should be a return spring attached to the operating lever, there is a small hole through the lever. If there should be a spring has anybody got any details regarding its length, shape etc and also where it located in the primary chain case.

any help with this would be welcome.
