Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

Most ride-on lawnmovers use semi-fluid grease in their gearbox.

This means supplies are available at about any suburban mower shop.
Buying it in giant toothpaste tubes makes it simple to inject into most filler plugs.
Wipe it clean and warm it in your pocket before use !!

Is the EW kickstart prone to bending. I straightened mine as it was catching the rear silencer but within a few kicks we are back to where we started. Attached is a photo of the kickstart and the underside of the lever is little more than 2mm thick whereas the top side is more like 10mm. Was this all part of Douglas trying to save weight. Any suggestions on a modification – perhaps welding in some additional metal? Thanks

Penrith in Australia make a semi fluid & steering box lube which they recommend for Burman motorcycle gearboxes, veteran car transmissions, steering boxes and industrial applications.
NlGI 00  Lithuim based.
I have used this in my B29 gearbox.
Hope this assists.

The handbook says grease and give a period trade name, but it seems to have been a semi-fluid or self-leveling grease. Wheel bearing grease would get pushed permanently aside and not work its way into the sleeve gear bush.

Which begs the question - did these boxes have oil or grease in them ??

Yes, that is the level plug.

The gearbox shown is an early type, Later ones did not have a breather tube. There should be a port at the top of the case, to the left of the shift lever trunnion for the grease fitting.

It might seem a daft question but I assume the lower plug on the side of the EW gearbox is the level plug. The attached picture from the manual shows the upper plug with a tube which is not fitted on my bike - is this tube just a breather. I assume this upper plug is the filler plug but I can't remove it as after a couple of turns the spiggot jams up against the frame.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Thanks Doug, that is very helpful, especially seeing the amount of offset after the slight bend at the spline end.
I think that the peg on mine is more or less at a right angle to the lever - so your 'heavy foot ' theory is probably correct.
