Any Budding Writers
« on: 17 Jun 2020 at 13:31 »
The club has received the following email. If anyone is interested please contact Amberley Publishing direct

I am a commissioning editor at Amberley Publishing in Stroud and I am looking for authors to write books for our motorcycles series.
The series consists of paperback books which may be between 8,000 and 20,000 words and with between 70 and 200 illustrations, depending on the content.
If you or any of your club members or contacts would like to discuss a book about Douglas motorcycles I would be glad to hear from you. I will be happy to send you further information on the series and the publishing arrangements.
Many thanks.
With best wishes.

Would anyone read (or more importantly buy) a book about racing Douglases?

There's now quite a pile of material on this site that covers the development of the Douglas racing motorcycle: the thread on Les Bailey https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index.php?topic=7014 has the previously unknown (or at least previous unpublished) development history of the ohv Douglas from the beginnings through to the RA and IOM TT models of the mid 1920s, the thread on RAs in Australia https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index.php?topic=5077 covers the birth of dirt track racing in Australia and the role of the RA, the thread on the Dixon twin cam racers and Doug's article on the same https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index.php?topic=5122, the thread on the 1932 TT Racers https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index.php?topic=5444 has a lot of interesting material on the fantastic, although unsuccessful, TT, Brooklands, and Sprint bikes of the 1930s, and so on.

Add in a chapter about the Dirt Track Douglas (probably the only bit of the story well covered in already-published books), a chapter on the post war racers (90 Plus), and a chapter on the post-Douglas-demise era of privateer sprinting, and I think there's a great story to be told.

But while people might buy a book on "The Vincent Black Lightning", they may no be so keen to line up for an offering on Douglas racers. I suspect the key would be great photos: Does the LDC have an archive of racing photos?

Cheers

Leon

Amberly are Ok and its not a scam but dont expect to get rich  (I wrote 'The Vincent Black Shadow' for them 3 years ago) you have to pay for all the copyright on the photos you use which in my case meant I have only just broken even but I did enjoy writing it . You also need to know your subject well (really well)  as there are a lot of anoraks out there.
