Piston clearance Omega Pistons 350 Comp
« on: 13 Sep 2015 at 20:37 »
Hi

I have just purchased a pair of +20 Omega pistons and rings from the club for my 350 comp.

The piston/cylinder clearance is a tight 4 thou. Does anybody know if this is okay, the original pistons had some slight scuffing top and bottom on the skirts but it didn't look recent and there
was no alloy on the bores.

Andy,
From what I understand, when the pistons were ordered, Omega were given the standard bore size (60.8mm/2.394") with the remit to make the pistons to suit. Omega have a good reputation, so I would assume that the 4 thou you have measured would be correct for the particular alloy of the new pistons. Remember, with motorcycle pistons it is normal practice for the bore to be the stated size, with the clearance allowed for on the piston.
With regard to them going into a Competition model - when we rode our Comps in observed trials, we had no problems from overheating - in fact, the opposite - especially with an all alloy motor!

   Regards,
                Eddie.
