It sits on the front forks and acts as a return for the front brake

I think you mean the part which is the transition from brake cable to rod halfway up the fork. A sleeve /spring assy?

Hi All
In response to the question above I have prepared a sketch of a typical spring box set of components. These were fited to most Douglas models between 1924 and 1939. I have four machines with spring boxes and they all differ very slightly in detail so I cannot claim originality for any of them . The sketch attached is not fully dimensioned but there is sufficient information to enable understanding of the function and to manufacture a working set of parts. A rear brake spring from several BSA models has been recommended for some time as exactly what is required inside the spring box. This spring should be a nice easy fit inside the spring box body and the diameter of the adaptor where the cable is anchored should be a nice easy fit inside the spring . The lower stepped part of the adaptor should also be a sliding fit inside the body . The nipple should be a good fit inside the bore of the adaptor and the width of the slot in the adaptor and the bore of the upper knurled adjuster a loose fit for the diameter of the Bowden cable inner used. The knurling of the adjuster and its locking ring is straight on some examples and diamond on others. Your choice. Chris.
