Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

The general wisdom is that if introducing oil into the cyls improves the pressures,
then the ring seal is not great.
Simply re-ringing with new rings may bring back all of the sparkling performance.
Subject to all else being good ...

BTW, compression tests are generally required also to be performed with the engine hot.
Has this engine been run recently when you did these ?
If the engine has merely been parked for a while, and cold, it may not quite be a true test ?
Hopethishelps.

Leon,

The software used to generate these experimental podcast operates in a closed, private environment. It does not store the content, nor share it for use by anyone else or anything else, either now, or in the future. This was just an experiment attempting to turn text into an audio format. As per your request, I have deleted both the podcast links and files from the server. This topic will be closed, then completely removed it in a few days time. I regret having tried this experiment and apologise to all for my insensitivity.

I think I have a problem with my new (to me) Douglas 80 plus. One more resto for appearance not for go? Anyway, compression figures:
        LHS.  RHS
Dry.  130.  80
Oily.  155.  100

With both spark plugs out, throttle held wide open, kicking as swift as I can. 'Oily' is with 5 squirts of straight 40 down the plughole from an oil can. Obviously the RHS needs attention, but does anyone have a figure that should be reached? IS the left cylinder OK or not?, 130-155 seems good.

PS I bought the bike from the estate of a guy apparently known to the LDMCC, near Cambridge? Nice maroon 80Plus.

Thanks all

To make it clear, no-one asked to use my posts (particularly in the SL Bailey thread) to make an AI-generated podcast, and if someone did ask I'd say "No".

There are many reasons for this, including that the material from which the AI has "learned" is my intellectual property, and the AI has no possibility on improving on my understanding of the material because it doesn't have access to many (any?) resources beyond the thread. I don't think, for example, that it has access to motorcycle magazines of the period or some of the reference books I consulted.

I find it upsetting to have my material explicitly fed into an AI for a reason I don't understand. I'm surprised that the "podcast" is still publicly available; if it stays there much longer I'll delete all my posts on this forum; of course they're no longer needed as the AI has captured everything of interest, and can no-doubt generate posts long into the future.

Google Translate version of Müs' post above.

Quote from: MüsThanks, the link was exactly what I needed.
Since I have to translate everything first, searching the forum is not always easy,
so thanks

Danke, der Link war genau das, was ich brauchte.
Da ich alles erst übersetzen muss, fällt mir die Suche im Forum nicht immer leicht,
also danke

If you search on this forum for 2 ¾ HP Big End Bearings
you will find several replies suggesting 2 to 3 thou clearance.
This gives some room for the oil to be where it needs to be.
In Imperial, this would be 0.002" to 0.003"
This assumes the conrod parts are perfectly circular, and the shaft/journals also.

I don't know how this relates to 20 100ths of a mm ??  (~ 8 thou  ???)
That sounds like things are worn, and possibly oval ?
There are several good replies on getting worn parts back into good condition.

Thank you all very much for your comments and feedback. The message has been received loud and clear!

As the topic title suggested, these were just experiments. And if we don't like those experiments or want them here, that's completely fine.

I will move this topic to Forum News, Issues, Suggestions and remove the Quick comment on the front page. It was an experiment that failed and I will look for better ways to provide introductory material for those interested in Douglas.

Thanks again, Dave

As this part of the forum tends to be reserved for Douglas related topics and this discussion is veering towards a conversation on the merits and attitudes towards ai can I request this be moved , I know the original topic was to bring to our attention an  ai generated podcast about S L Bailey and one about wheels and rims, but as the discussion is not about the content of those but more about the manner of creation of those, then I think the Kingswood Pub would be a  better place for it.
My wife just explained what a podcast is, but in doing so she mentioned things  and people like influencers and got to say I am completely shocked and bemused by the whole shebang, and grateful that I have so far been able to avoid it all, just hope that I can keep on doing so.....
