Dragonfly clutch
« on: 16 Jun 2023 at 17:09 »
Having mentioned previously the stiff operation of my dragonfly clutch i have stripped gearbox and clutch unit and fou d the thrust bearing ok but thepad that the thrust presses on was broken ,isthis meant to be tufnol, steel or what.luckily i have another clutch assembly .The crankshaft casselated nut was all but stripped so have ordered a new one,has anyone tried a nyloc nut and loctite???
Lastly the gearbox leaks oil by the bucket into the bell housing,is this a felt seal,?.
And lastly is a spare parts book available or has anyone got one for sale.

The LDMCC sell repro parts books for £13. See page 38 of the current Conrod.

Nigel,
Your penultimate question - "the gearbox leaks oil by the bucket into the bellhousing, is this a felt seal?" The answer is, yes it is a felt seal, but the seal only 'controls' the leakage. Any oil that passes the seal, drains down to lubricate the front layshaft bearing. If a sealed bearing has been fitted to the layshaft, it probably stops that oil getting to the bearing - in which case it has no option but to leak into the bellhousing. Also, if the gearbox is stood on it's end (even with the open bearing), the oil will fed back up the oilway to deposit itself on the workshop floor!  This is the case with all postwar gearboxes.

  Regards,
                Eddie.
