Help with information please!
« on: 09 Aug 2016 at 23:05 »
We are a historic village in Australia and we have recently acquired a very nice Douglas Motorcycle. I would like to write a signboard for visitors, but my research seems to have some conflicting data. I have attached a picture. I know it is 1926 and I think it is 350cc twin cylinder horizontally opposed. 2.75 hp? 3-Speed? Chain driven.
Its engine number is 85639 and frame number is CF 84722. Transmission is OG17448. It has a EIC magneto
Any information to help write a signboard for tourists would be welcome. Thanks.

From the identifying section of this website it most closely matches a 1926 CW26 which is a chain drive version of the 2.75 hp with, as you say, a 3 speed gearbox. The frame number seems to have one too many digits.

Hi,
According to the LDMCC machine register, the frame number should be CF 8472, and it is listed as a 1926 2¾ CW. Originally, the cycle parts would have been all black - just the petrol tank would have been silver with blue panels.

  Regards,
                Eddie.

Thank you Ian, Eddie and Red. All of that information is useful to me. I like to get those signboards correct, as there is always someone who will pick up on any mistakes.
And I am right in saying it is 350cc (well, 348 really)?? It's just that the seller had it as 600cc. The cylinder heads look too small for that.

Yes - 350 - certainly not a 600

Thanks. Got it sorted now.
I checked the frame number again. the second 2 is stamped sideways after the other 2. No idea why!

You might find that the "2 on its side" is the Douglas Trade Mark, which is a D with a K inside it, representing Douglas Kingswood.
