Knob for gear change lever

We lost one on the weekend - what do people use as a basis for making a new one ? Diameter is 1.25"

I used an old Bakelite door knob.
The right size and feel.

I recall reading that the gear knob is Ebonite.
You could buy a small block of Ebony wood ($5) from a specialist wood supplier (they usually have stalls at wood expos) and turn one to suit. The timber is very dense and would drill and tap well - it looks beaut when polished.
