Hello from Gloucestershire!
« on: 01 Sep 2014 at 14:10 »
Hello to one and all!

Recently acquired what I believe to be a 1930 S5 (open to be corrected on that?). Frame Number is YF2151.

I have all parts but as you can see she is in far from concourse condition.  I would be interested in advice on how to proceed with restoration and how much time and money the bike warrants?

All advice very welcome!

Rgds, Julian.

Hi Julian
According to the London Douglas Motor Cycle Club (LDMCC) Machine Register the machine with frame number YF 2151 is an S6 model i.e. 600cc as opposed to the S5 of 500cc. In case you do not have the outer cover for the primary chain case, The LDMCC pre-war Spares Scheme does have these in stock. The extent of restoration costs will depend upon just how much you can do yourself and the extent of originality you are prepared to seek. These machines were issued with nickel plated barrels. The costs of cleaning, shot blasting, electro stripping of the remains of the old nickel, further shot blasting and chemical cleaning, masking the areas you do not want plating and then electroless nickel plating will be very expensive. Most people simply paint them or in some cases powder coat. They are a very desirable machine and although not rare they do not often change hands. Many consider this model to be one of the nicest early Douglas models with some unique features contributed by the famous Freddie Dixon who is credited with its design. Chris.

Thanks for the response Chris.  I have the chain cover.  Yes S6 - I did a bit more digging.  Looks like I have got a fairly major undertaking on my hands.  Happy to disassemble and reassemble myself.  Clearly nickle plating is a job for the specialists.  Unsure whether to restore to rideable condition or go the whole hog at present.  Also there are commercial considerations - I don't want to spend £15K on a bike worth £5K.

Some useful info Chris.  I will keep toe forum posted with progress...

I have a 1932 E32 T6 which is very similar, I see that you have the centre stand extensions fitted, look after them, also be aware that the kick start should be  sitting at about the 10 o'clock position when at rest, it has a very simple rubber mechanical stop which will not survive if the kick start is fitted higher its possible to damage the gearbox casings. You do not say if you are a member of the LDMMC but I would say its worth joining lots of information and some spare parts, even a nice special spanner for adjusting the tappets

best regards
