Douglas gearbox

Hi,
I am restoring a 1920/1921, 2 3/4 hp. I took the gearbox apart to polish the casing and found it had no oil in it, but gears were smeared with grease. What is right, oil or grease? I will probably have more questions over time as I progress.

Murray,

A self-leveling grease is appropriate. You can make same by mixing wheel bearing grease with 600 weight transmission oil (sold for Model T Ford transmissions). The proper viscosity is when at normal room temperature if you drag a finger through a cup of the 'groil', the surface should smooth out in about a minute. When warm it will be slightly more fluid.
