Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

Loose Flywheel 1925 TS 350

My 2 3/4hp Douglas has been an excellent runner over the last twenty years giving much enjoyment.
Recently, after an emergency stop/shutdown due to another roaduser, I noticed the Flywheel has loosened. What I would like advice on is, What is the correct procedure for re-establishing a correct fit? Can I use a rattle gun or is this too extreme? Key or no key? Grinding paste to re-seat or lock tight? Would really appreciate some more experienced member comments.

No, too extreme.

Key if there is one.

Have a look at the tapers on the shaft and flywheel. If everything is in good order, there should be no real need for either lapping or loctite, on the shaft at least. Just make sure everything is clean. The nut should have a nice new lock washer, or some loctite of the appropriate grade. Someone holding the flywheel with two hands while you tighten the nut with a ring spanner should be about the right torque?!



Further to Leon's advice - if you are fitting a new key, make sure it is not too tall, otherwise the flywheel will ride on it, rendering the taper totally ineffective.
