T6 steering head bearings
« on: 06 Feb 2017 at 21:30 »
Hello all,
I have my 1930 T6 front end apart at the moment for refurbishing. On removing the steering head I found the bottom steering outer race badly pitted. Does anyone know if the bearing and races are still available and if so, what brand and # they might be?

I have now replaced the lower steering head bearing and found that the original SKF (W5833A) is not available. The outer race was not able to be removed without damaging it and the markings are only visible when removed.
I obtained a new Timkin bearing with the same inner diameter and machined a bearing holder/sleeve to be pressed into the head stem to accept the new outer race. A spacer was required under the bearing to raise it up to the height of the old bearing.
I’ve only ridden it 100 kms but it appears to work perfectly.
My diagrams are nothing like Doug K’s drawings but should suffice.
