Mark V Front wheel bearing removal
« on: 21 Nov 2016 at 11:12 »
Hi

I'm trying to replace the wheel bearings in the front wheel of my Mark V. Do I need to split the front hub to do that (ie cut the spokes out and remove the bolts clamping the brake drum and hub together), or can it be done with the wheel complete (eg applying heat to drum casing housing the bearing).

The issue seems to be that unless I split the hub (ie a wheel rebuild), I have no way to apply pressure to either bearing to remove them.

As always the sage words of Douglas experts are ALWAYS appreciated!

Steve.

Hi Steve,
The 2 front wheel bearings are mounted on a sleeve - this sleeve has a special nut with 4 holes for a peg spanner on the brakedrum end. The other end of the sleeve has a head with either 2 flats or a hexagon - beware when undoing the nut, it has a LH thread!! With the nut removed, the sleeve usually slides easily out of the bearings. With the sleeve removed, the bearings can then be drifted out of the hub without any further dismantling.
  Regards,
               Eddie.

Hi Eddie

Sleeve successfully removed! Its the distance tube between the bearings that's the issue (Item 8 in Plate 26 of the Douglas Spares book), which is revealed once you've removed the sleeve.

So some success but no bearings out............yet.

Steve

Steve,
You should be able to push the distance tube to one side, so that you can get a drift against the centre of the far bearing to drive it out. The distance tube might still be pinched between the 2 bearings (as well as being supported by solidified grease), but should move with a little persuasion.

  Eddie.

Thanks Eddie.

You are (as normal) right. The distance tube will move across.

Easy enough to get a drift in then.

Another (small) step for the Douglas rebuild................
