Is this a Douglas petrol tank?
« on: 03 May 2016 at 17:52 »
Hi, I have an old petrol tank that I have been told is probably off a Douglas. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me if it is and if so what model/s, year/s or any other info. Thanks, Gary.

You've got to love a tartan tank! 1931-ish, but a bit out of my area of expertise.

The year is definitely 1931 or 32 as it has the tartan band around the side panels. Possibly K or M model.

Yes this tank is also the tank that fits the D29 without the tartan paint job of course. Years ago when collecting doug bits I started off with a D29 frame and minus the tank put the oil tank inside a B29 tank. Within a short time another D29 frame turned up so I modified this frame  to a D28 using an EW  top frame section. Havent heard of any other D29 in Aust but believe there is about six D28.

Hi All
From shape of the tank in question I suggest that it may be a A31 or A32, B32 or C32 with the gear change lever is mounted on the frame and is presumably with the actual gate built into the plate holding the knee pad on the tank, the Knee pad having a slot to accommodate the gear change lever.
The K32 or M32 tank would have threaded bosses for mounting the gear change gate, but they are not obvious in the photos and the shape of these tanks are similar to those fitted to S/6 etc. which more sloping to the rear does not have the noticeable hump towards the rear.
Hope this helps

A31, A32 and C32. (1931-32)

K32 and M32 would have an additional set of holes for the hand shift gate, which I don't see. The A31, A32, and C32 had the hand change gate built into the knee grip, so extra hols not required. Just two each side for the knee grip.

Basically the same petrol tank was used on the 250 & 350cc models for 1934, but no plating and no tartan. Also the bottom was three pieces of sheet metal, and not one piece incorporating the floor and the tunnel (like yours).

And again the same petrol tank was used on the 250/350cc models in 1936 (and any sold in 1937?), but the catalog shows a separate hand change gate, like the K32/M32 models.
