RA Douglas parts wanted: Rear brake pedal
« on: 01 Dec 2013 at 20:29 »
I'm looking for a brake pedal to suit an RA. It's a very three dimensional object: for most of its length it runs parallel with the frame tube, before snaking out and up to clear the exhaust pipe. Hopefully the photos below are enough to identify it. I'm an enthusiast for originality, so the correct pedal would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Leon,

These pics might give a better view.

The second pedal in the first view is for the banking sidecar.

Thanks Doug - no excuse for not identifying it now. If I can't find an original pedal, making one would be a good job for a blacksmith.

Except it is hollow, oval tubing...

Short lengths of oval tube aren't difficult to make. Just turn up a couple of wheels for a Jenny, then run round tube through them until you squeeze it to the required section.

If you do not possess or have access to a Jenny it is also possible to simply squeeze round tube gently in a vice a little at a time gradually increasing the pressure along the length of the tube until you achieve the ratio of width to height that you desire. I constructed a complete rear carrier for an early Douglas by this method. When constructing a pair of veteran forks for a 2.3/4hp I made up tools for the two sizes of oval tube each comprising a pair of ball races about 2.1/2 " diameter each sleeved with a semi elliptical form running on pivots spaced a distance apart such that the gap between formed the full eliptical shape between two hefty side plates. The smaller section was pulled through the tool in six foot lengths via. a Dexion framework and long studding. The larger section was achieved in short lengths by simply hammering the round tube through the tool with a club hammer. Chris.

Thanks for the tips - the pedal could indeed be made, however I'd prefer an original if anyone out there has one. Let's face it, there should be a box of almost new ones out there somewhere, discarded in order to take to the dirt! Please have a look in the shed.

Still looking. Excellent price paid for an original pedal, or exotic swaps available. Please have a look in the shed!

Thanks
