ca. 1930 350cc E.W. silencer
« on: 05 Apr 2010 at 13:48 »
Hello,

I have a  ca. 19930(?) type silencer for swop, see 1st picture. This is a replica item made by Armours of Bournemouth. I bought it 20 years ago, it has been fitted since but never used.
I would like to swop it for a 1926 type silencer for a 350cc E.W. see 2nd picture. Basically I just need the silencer - not sure if the fishtail on the picture is an original item.

kind regards
Wilfried

Hi,

I have now made a correct silencer for my E.W. - if you are interested, please have a look at http://www.brufnut.de/DOUGLAS/silencer/silencer.htm

The depicted Armours item is now for sale; I am asking 70 GBP for it. From what I have found out, it has the correct size and shape for the 350cc saddle tank models from 1929 on.
Please drop me a line if you are interested.

cheers Wilfried

Wilfried,

You queried on your website how the silencer and exhaust were connected. The exhaust pipe extends well into the silencer body. The end is blanked off, and slots cut in the top side of the pipe act as a diffuser. You can see the general scheme in the illustration in this post.

Many replacement systems have the pipe terminated just inside the silencer and lack a diffuser. The lack of support is typically augmented with trying to clamp the sinlencer inlet onto the exhaust pipe, or even welding the pipe to the silencer.

Hi Doug,

thanks a lot for the information, just a shame that I never found this before - I see the post has been there for more than a year!
Juris Ramba has given me a similar description, but unfortunately also a day after I made my silencer... :|

Well mine is empty at the time being, the idea was to add something to the rear end of the inlet pipe and/or insert a baffle tube into the outlet tube, depending on how much noise the thing makes! As you wrote on 25.7.2009, I can still weld an extension with slots to the exhaust pipe. I understand this was originally a part of the silencer canister, but making it as a part of the pipe has the advantage that you can get at it to modify the slots or just to clean them!

kind regards
Wilfried

No, it was originally a continuation of the exhaust pipe that slipped into the silencer. You can splice an extension onto your exhaust, either the same size tube, or it may be easier to step down one size so you can telescope the extension inside your existing pipe.
